Patrick Harders: Hi! I am Patrick Harders with Outdoor Lighting Perspectives. Today we are discussing outdoor lighting, and now I want to show you how to install well lights under a tree with a large canopy.

We are putting in two well lights to light up the full canopy in this tree. What we first want to do is dig our hole. We are going to use a post hole digger, but any small shovel or spade will work. We want to dig this out. If we are worried about water and a wet location, we are going to want to give this fixture a gravel base, but in this application, the ground is actually very dry, as you can see. We have our quick connect system, and what we are going to want to do is fit our connectors around the wire, squeeze finger tight just a little bit, and then we are going to take our channel locks. We want to make sure we give this a good hard squeeze, so that this connection never becomes loose.

With our extra wire, we bury it underneath the fixture. This will give us ability to service this bulb very easily in the future, and also move the fixture, if this tree should grow, if we ever want to get a wider breadth of light.

So we bury the well light. We have got our glass lens covered to protect mulch and debris from getting inside that fixture. And that's how you install a well light.

Let's look at how we are going to install this fixture on the front of the house. As I mentioned, we are going to want to be about eight to ten inches off the front of the house. We have already run the wire to this point. We are going to take our digging tool. The post hole diggers work great. You can also use a small shovel, any kind of digging, even a little spade.

So we are right here at our wire. So we are going to go ahead and take our quick connect and we are going to wrap it on either side of our wire here. Once we fit it around, we give it a good tight squeeze and then we take our channel lock pliers and we squeeze real hard with it. This is going to make certain that this connection does not come loose. I like to take all the excess wire and put it under the fixture. I like having excess wire that gives us the ability to move the fixture in the future, if we ever need to, or makes it easy to service that light bulb, when that light bulb does burn out.

So we pack the fixture tight. I am going to put our lens cover on it. Lens cover is going to help keep debris and mulch and everything out of the fixture.

So there we have our well light fully installed.
