Hi! I am Mark Osbourne. I am the founder of Manor Works Painting and today, we are talking about painting the interior of a bedroom. Now that we have finished doing the priming, thats required, we are ready to move on to the first step in the painting process, something called cutting. What we are going to be doing is cutting the ceiling, what that means is we are going to be taking a brush or you could also use a roller, but in this case, we will be using a brush to cut a small line, about one to two inches of paint, between where the edge of the ceiling is and where it meets the wall, thats the process of cutting.

Before we talk a little bit about that, I am going to show you some tips to use when doing it, lets talk a little bit about the paint that we are going to be applying to this ceiling. In this case and in most residential settings, you are going to be applying a latex-based paint. The key when you are painting a ceiling is to use a low sheen. In this case, we are going to be using a flat-based latex paint. The purpose for that, the amount of sheen or also called shine or gloss in the product is designed to help mask any imperfections that might be visible. Ceilings are notorious for having variation and waves in them due to how drywalls are installed. So, what we want to do is minimize any of those imperfections by utilizing a flat latex-based paint to help mask some of those things. w that weve talked a little bit about the paint that we are going to use, let me show you some techniques in terms of how to cut. Again, you can paint using whats called a long john or a whiz roller, which is basically a small roller that will allow you to get into a crevice and paint in very quick fashion, but in this case, we are going to be actually using a brush. When painting with a brush, the first step to know is you want to choke down on the actual handle of the brush and hold it in the same way that you would hold a pencil in your hand. This will allow you get better control of the paint. Another great tip when doing cutting is to get your paint on your brush like I have done here and then to wipe the excess off of just one side of the brush. So, notice this side has paint on it and this side has been wiped off. When you are cutting, what you want to do is use the side that doesnt have the paint on it against the surface that you do not want to get the paint on and then brush in one direction and the key and the secret of doing this is to watch the backhand side of the brush, not the front-hand side of the brush. By following the backhand side of the brush, you will be able to see that you are not getting paint on the adjacent surface and knowing that whats on the front side of the brush, is going to adequately cover what it is that you want to have done. Now that we have talked a little bit about various painting techniques, lets see how the cutting is actually done in this case. Notice that as the painter applies the paint on that cut line he is watching the backhand side of the brush to see exactly where the edge of the paint is going to be applied. In addition to cutting the line that separates the ceiling and the wall, you also want to cut around any items that might be on the ceiling. In this case, we have a vent that we need to cut around. Depending on how severe the color change is or in what condition the project is in, you might have to do two steps of cutting to apply two coats of paint. In this case, the ceiling is already in great shape and we are painting it the same color, so we are only going to apply a onecoat application, so we are only going to cut the ceiling one time. Now that we have finished cutting, we are ready to move on to the next step in the painting process, we are going to roll the ceiling.
