Joe Newland: Hi! My name is Joe New. I am a Product Development Manager for Black & Decker's Outdoor Products division. Today, I am going to show you how to properly trim hedges and shrubs. In this video series we provide tips and techniques for a great looking landscape in your yard.
First, we will discuss hedge and shrub trimming basics by explaining why, when, and how often you should do it. Then I will show you how to create a guide to trim formal hedges by putting in stakes and tying off level strengths.
Next, I will show you some techniques for properly trimming your bushes by cutting into the leafy growth and tapering from top to bottom to retain good growing conditions. To get started with this project you will want to have a hedge trimmer that's right for the job. In this case, the cordless one will work just fine. Some string, stakes, a mallet to drive the stakes, scissors, pruning shears, and tape measure, small tarp, fertilizer, and mulch, and have access to work.
There are a few safety precautions to consider when trimming our hedges and shrubs. Always wear eye protection and gloves. Also dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. If you are working with corded trimmer be aware of the power cord and make sure it's out of the way, and that you use the cord retainer. It's also very important to read the instruction manual thoroughly for all the line of equipments before use and follow all the warning and safety instructions.
