Every Child By Two (ECBT) was founded by Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter and Former First Lady of Arkansas Betty Bumpers in 1991 as a result of the measles epidemic that killed over 120 people, many of them children. Carter and Bumpers have been working on immunizations since their husbands were governors in the early 70s and have been credited with the passage of laws mandating school-age vaccination requirements. The goals of ECBT are to raise awareness of the critical need for timely immunizations and to foster a systematic way to immunize all of America's children by age two. To forward its agenda, ECBT enlists the support of elected officials and their spouses, concerned community leaders, and representatives of many national organizations. ECBT also devotes a great deal of time to educating the public about the safety of our nation's vaccine supply through its Vaccinate Your Baby campaign. ECBT has valuable resources available on both of its websites -www.ecbt.org and www.vaccinateyourbaby.org
Vaccinations – Vaccine Safety
Vaccination expert Amy Pisani explains that vaccines are held to the highest standards of safety highlighting the extensive research conducted before they are approved.
Transcripts
Amy Pisani: Hi! My name is Amy Pisani and I am the Executive Director of Every Child by Two. Today, I am talking about vaccines and during this video; I want to talk to you about vaccine safety.
Vaccines are held to the highest standards for safety. Since vaccines are administered to healthy people, they are among the most rigorously tested and safest medical products on the market.
It can take 10 or more years and millions and millions of dollars to thoroughly test a new vaccine before it is licensed and made available to the public. For example the Rotavirus vaccine was tested in more than 60,000 children and it took over 20 years to develop.
The Food and Drug Administration ensures the safety, purity, potency, and effectiveness of the vaccines in the United States.
Once on the market vaccines are continuously monitored by government agencies, health plans and oversight committees to ensure that there are no ill effects among the larger population.
The immunization schedules for children, teens, and adults are created by a group of vaccine experts called the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. The schedules are carefully designed to determine the proper timing of vaccines, to ensure optimal and timely protection from diseases.
Dr. Paul Offit: I mean this sort of vague notion of vaccines are causing autism or allergies or attention deficit disorder or multiple sclerosis or diabetes, all these sort of permanent harms of that people fear just isn't true.
Vaccines are held to the highest standard of the safety because they have to be, they are given to the healthy children. Before vaccines are licensed they are tested in 10s and 10s of thousands of children to make sure that they are safe.
Amy Pisani: People who have questions or concerns about vaccines should talk to their doctor. Other reliable sources of information include the, Vaccinate Your Baby website and the websites from the Children's Hospitals of Philadelphia and the centers for disease control and prevention.
