Toilet Repair

Les Zell, Master Plumber and consultant to The Family Handyman magazine, shows you how to fix common toilet problems: a broken shutoff valve, a leaking flapper, a broken flush lever, and a shut-off valve that won’t shut off. [Music Playing]Les Zell: Hi! I'm Les Zell Master Plumber in St. Paul Minnesota, contributing editor for Family Handyman Magazine the leading magazine for do it yourselfers and today we are at the Handyman studios and we are going to be talking about toilet repair.

And it's important that your toilet is working properly so that you don't have expensive repairs and you can save money if you are wasting water. What we are going to be covering today is some basic toilet repairs like replacing your shut off, replacing the fill valve, new flush lever and even a new flush valve seal. After going through these tips you should be able to complete some of the basic toilet repairs in your home and some of the tools that you are going to need are an adjustable channel lock, an adjustable crescent wrench, needle-nose pliers, the screw driver or both fill ups and slotted, a tubing cutter and some emery cloth.

Some good safety precautions while we are showing you these tips on how to work on your toilet are nice absorbent towel or rag or sponge because it's going to get wet and you also might want a pair of these latex or rubber gloves if you have cuts or scratches when you are working in the tank or the ball area of the toilet. So one of the things that's important is to know what kind of toilet you have, there are many different models if you have a smart phone or a digital camera what's really handy is to be able to take a picture of it and that would be the insides or the model number which is usually located on the back of the tank and bring it with you to the store so they can help you find the right replacement parts. Let me tell you a little bit about myself, I am a Master plumber 15 years here in Minnesota and a contributing editor for the Family Handyman magazine. They are one of the largest and oldest do it yourselfer publications and today let's get started we are going to show you how you can do your repairs.
