Bruce Ream: Hi! I'm Bruce Ream, Managing Director of AAA Partnership Programs. Today, I'm going to be discussing technology that can assist you in renting a car.

From apps to websites, there are many technologies available to help you plan your vacation. Use the web to research your destination, compare rates, make reservations, and even check in virtually to save time at airport or rental commerce.

If you have a smartphone, there are many apps available to assist with your travel planning, from finding great hotels, restaurants and attractions along the way to turn-by-turn directions. There are even mobile apps that use GPS technology to help motorists compare prices at nearby gas stations, a valuable tool for anyone watching their fuel budget.

Also, many car-rental companies run GPS devices that identify exactly where you're and guide you to where you want to go. Travelers with a smartphone or E-reader device can simplify packing by bringing along digital travel guide books rather than printed travel information. Do not let any of these technologies become a dangerous distraction on the road. Your best bet is to enjoy apps and digital information when you're safely parked.

Enter any addresses into your navigation device prior to your departure. If you need to order direction or input an address while driving, pull over to recalculate directions. Use a device capable of giving voice commands while driving rather than having to divert your attention to a map or screen. Taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your risk of a crash.

For the do-it-yourself traveler, self-service tools such as kiosks are available at some airline check-in lines and car rental locations that allow you to skip the line and send you on your way quickly.

Many car-rental companies allow you to run electronic pass for toll roads, enabling you to avoid delays at toll lanes. Even if you have made all your reservations electronically, print out all of your travel paperwork as a backup should you have any issues with your phone or laptop and don't forget to bring the charger for all electronic devices.

So that's the basic of car-rental technology. These car-rental tips will help you get the most out of your rental car. Have a great trip. Safe travels!
