John Nielsen: Hi! I am John Nielsen with AAA Approved Auto Repair. We are all concerned about saving gas and one of the factors is you. By changing the way we drive, we can get more miles out of a gallon of gas and it can be as simple as changing the way we accelerate. A great example is if you pretend there is an egg between your foot and the gas pedal as you accelerate. You want to accelerate and break in a manner that you don't crush the egg, easing on the gas, easing on the brakes are a great way to save fuel. One of the biggest factors in saving fuel is to simply slow down a little bit. For example, for every 5 miles an hour, you go over 60 miles an hour, the average car is going to use another 24 cents per gallon of gas. That's like saving almost quarter every time you fill up for every gallon you add.
And most of us know that unnecessary idling is wasting fuel. We can think of that as 0 miles per gallon. So, when you have the opportunity, perhaps anytime you are going to be idling for more than 30 seconds, simply turn the car off. It's going to save us a little bit of fuel.
None of these tips will cost you a dime and putting them all together can save you big at the gas pump.
