Richard Posluszny: If you're looking for a high performing SUV, the Equinox probably isn't the right car for you. Remember, fuel economy is name of the game. Rather than pounding the throttle with Equinox, rather you try to see it can be your last MPG figure since your last fill up.
The EPA estimates that the front-wheel drive Equinox will get 22 in the city and 32 on the highway while the all-wheel drive version were in 20-29. Not a huge difference, but something nonetheless. So if you don't need all-wheel drive, save some gas to go with the front-wheel drive Equinox.
Those fuel economy stats are at the top of its class, but it doesn't really matter if you can only obtain them when you're babying the car. The standard engine, the one that gets those great fuel economy numbers is a 2.
4 liter four-cylinder that makes 182 horsepower. Most reviewers say it's powerful enough for most buyers and that the six-cylinder isn't worth trading up for. But if you've got to have more power, there is this optional 3.
0 liter six-cylinder motor that produces 264 horsepower.
The standard front-wheel drive on the Equinox is quite good on in-drive pavement. The problem is if you option the six-cylinder and are in the wet stuff, the six-cylinder with the front-wheel drive is just sending too much power to the front of the vehicle. This makes the car feel kind of unsure of itself and as if it's on ice-skates.
If money is a bit of a problem and you're on a tight budget, I would highly recommend going with a four-cylinder all-wheel drive just so you have an added sense of security and stability.
Now, is the six-cylinder really worth that 1500 bucks? If you go with the front-wheel drive, absolutely not; if you're going to go with the all-wheel drive and have a little bit more change in your pocket, absolutely.
Additionally, the suspension on the Equinox is tuned just right so that when you're on the highway and you're going at speed, it doesn't get that floaty feeling that you might feel on a boat and get you seasick. It's got a nice planted feel to it and feels nice and secure.
So that's how the Equinox drives. If you want to find out how usable, comfortable, and spacious the interior of the Equinox is, make sure to take a look at our seeding video.
