Jamie Page Deaton: You're not shopping subcompact cars because you're looking to be the go-to driver when your friends need to make an Ikea run. Well, it can't handle modular Swedish furniture; let's take a look at just what will fit in the Mazda 2.
Front storage spaces in the 2 are minimal, and that's typical for a subcompact car but we still want to show them to you just in case you're trading down into the class from something with more storage.
Now there is plenty of small open storage spaces for things like MP3 players or cell phones, and there are three cup-holders, two in the front, one in the back. And two of the three actually stay on them that they cannot handle cups that are larger than 20 ounces, which is a little bit strange because we're in America, we like our big gulps. And what it means is, only one person at a time can have that big gulp, I'm pretty sure that violates the Third Amendment.
Beyond that though, storage space, pretty typical for a subcompact car, but you don't have something like a center console so you can hide your phone or MP3 player if you want to leave it in your car. And there's really no place for you to put your purse or your bag and keep it out of sight or keep it secure.
And because this is a subcompact, cargo space in the rear of the Mazda 2 isn't going to be great. But it does have about 13 cubic feet of cargo space which is pretty typical for the class. Now one thing that does make the space feel a little bit bigger is that the storage area is really deep, you could stack suitcases or boxes up and haul a little bit more stuff than you would if it was just flush with the tailgate.
Now with that 13 cubic feet of cargo space, you can fit about a week's worth of groceries and a couple of small suitcases. If you need more space, you can fold down the rear seats and that increases you cargo space to almost 28 cubic feet. Again, that's not a gargantuan amount, your friends aren't going to be asking you to help them move, but it is enough if you keep a pretty pared-down lifestyle.
If you need more cargo space, you should check out the Honda Fit. It costs about a thousand dollars more than the 2 does; it has a larger cargo space that's a lot more practical and more usable.
Check out our other videos, especially the ones on other cars to consider to see if paying extra for that Fit is actually worth it.
