Jamie Page Deaton: The Mazda 2 has a low starting price, fun performance, and a cabin that treats the driver and front passenger well. But is that enough to take on the competition? If you're considering the Mazda 2, here are some other cars that should be on your shortlist.
The Mazda 2 and Ford Fiesta have a lot in common. They are about the same size, and reviewers say they both have good around-town performance. The Fiesta is available as either a sedan or a hatchback, but it really sets itself apart from the 2 with its high-tech optional features like Bluetooth, Navigation, and Ford SYNC system. Of course, if you start checking option boxes on the Fiesta, its price goes up quickly. Go for the 2 if you want to stick to a budget, pick the Fiesta if you want more interior features.
If you're looking at the Mazda 2 just because of its low price, not its small size, you should also check out the Kia Forte. The Forte starts at a few hundred dollars less than the 2 and is available as a coup, sedan, or hatchback. Opt for the sedan or hatchback and you'll get a much more comfortable interior than the Mazda 2. Plus the Forte has some amazing standard features for the price, including Bluetooth and USB port. The Forte is also an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick. If you're looking at the Mazda 2 for value, not size or performance, the Forte is a better fit for you.
Speaking of the fit, for a hatchback with more usable space, you'll want the Honda Fit. The Fit offers more cargo room and a more comfortable backseat, so it's a better choice if you have a lot of passengers or cargo. It starts at about a thousand dollars more than the 2 does but it gets about the same gas mileage.
And of course, you can't talk about cute urban runners without talking about the Smart Fortwo. It starts at about $2,000 less than the Mazda 2 does and gets better gas mileage, but it only seats two people, plus it has even less cargo space and reviewers say that while it's handy in the city, it's a chore on the highway. Unless you're soled on the Fortwo's distinctive looks, the Mazda 2 is the better option.
The small car market is extremely competitive, and while the Mazda 2 can keep up with the pack, it's really not that hard to find something with more passenger space, more cargo space, and more standard features for about the same price. Still the 2 manages a standout for its cutesy look and peppy performance. If that's what you're looking for plus the bargain price, the Mazda 2 is definitely worth a test drive. Check out our other videos for a more detailed look at the Mazda 2.
