Jamie Page Deaton: Now let's talk about how the GMC Terrain stacks up against the competition. If you can live without standard features like the rear-view camera you can save about $2,000 by getting the Chevy Equinox. It rides on the same platform as the Terrain, which means they have similar performance, but it doesn't have the standard features. So it costs a little bit less.

You could also check out the Honda CR-V or the Toyota RAV4. Both start about $3,000 less than the Terrain and offer more cargo space. The RAV4 even offers an optional third row seat. However, neither one is as good as the Terrain on gas mileage. You can beat the Terrain's fuel economy with an SUV, but you're going to have to get a hybrid like the Ford Escape Hybrid.

The downside of getting the Ford Escape Hybrid is even though you get better fuel economy it costs $5,000 more. Plus, while the hybrid will get better fuel economy in stop and go traffic, the Terrain is just as good on the highway. So really if you want to spend the money on the Hybrid versus opting for the Terrain it depends on where you do the majority of your driving.

Now if you're willing to spend a little bit more money you could afford the Cadillac SRX. It's on the same platform as the Terrain, but cost $9,000 more. But for that $9,000 you get a much more luxurious interior, plus a more powerful V6 engine. The downside of that engine is it really can't match the fuel economy that the Terrain gets.
