Jamie Deaton: Reviewers really like the CR-V because it offers a great combination of practicality and affordability. But if you're looking at the CR-V, there are some other SUVs you'll want to consider. Within the class, the CR-V's biggest competition is the Toyota RAV4. The two cost about the same, but the RAV4 offers some things that the CR-V doesn't, like an optional V-6 engine and an optional third row seat. It's definitely a one you should look at, but just know that the RAV4 has a side-swinging cargo door that reviewers don't like. They say that CR-V's cargo door, which opens up is a lot easier to live with.

If you really want sporty performance, you should check out the Mazda CX-7. It costs about the same as the CR-V and gets about the same fuel economy, but its performance is much zippier and it has a more powerful turbocharged engine. The downside to the CX-7 is it doesn't have as much cargo space as the CR-V does. If luxury features are really important to you, you can check out the GMC Terrain. It's sited about a $1,000 more than the CR-V does, but for the money, you get more standard features, like a rear view camera and satellite radio. Still, the bottom line on the Honda CR-V is it offers a great combination of practicality and affordability. If you're shopping compact SUVs, the Honda CR-V should definitely be on your list.
