Jamie Page Deaton: The Infiniti FX is one of the most powerful and sportiest SUVs in its class. But before we take it for a spin, let's talk about its two available engines. The base FX35 comes with a 3.

5 liter V6 engine that makes 303 horsepower. Now if you opt for the FX50, you would get a 5 liter V8 that makes 390 horsepower. However, opting for the FX50 adds nearly $10,000 to the FX's price and most reviewers say that the V6 is plenty powerful for most buyers. Both engines are paired with a seven speed automatic transmission with the manual shift mode.

Now with the V6 engine fuel economy on the FX is actually pretty good. According to the EPA, the FX gets 16 miles per gallon in the city and 23 miles per gallon on the highway. Only a few SUVs in this class do better. They include the Lexus RX 350, the Lincoln MKX and the Cadillac SRX.

So now you know what the FX has under its hood, let's take it for a spin. Most car reviewers really like how the Infiniti FX drives because it's such a great handler. It has really responsive steering, strong brakes and an overall nimble feel, plus the powerful engines don't hurt either.

Now if you get the FX50, you can opt for the sport package. It adds about $3,000 to the FX's price, but it adds continuous damping control which allows you to set the FX's suspension in either Sport or Auto mode.

Now in Sport mode though many reviewers say the ride becomes so stiff, it's almost too uncomfortable. So that's an option you may want to skip.

Another plus with the FX's performance is you can get some high-tech and innovative safety features, like Forward Collision Warning, which lets you know when you're coming up too fast on the car in front of you, or lane departure warning, which lets you know if you start to drift out of your lane.

You can also get Intelligent Cruise Control, which uses the sensors in the front bumper to keep the FX a set distance from the car in front of it. It's pretty nice feature for long road trips.

The bottom line on the Infiniti FX's performance is it's a very sporty and fun to drive SUV that has plenty of power, even if you just have the base V6 engine.

Another plus is that with the V6, fuel economy is also pretty good. Now the downside is because of the sporty handling, the ride can be a little bit stiff. As a result, most reviewers recommend that you stay away from the optional continuous damping control which can make the ride even stiffer.
