Jamie Page Deaton: Now let's talk about how the Mitsubishi Outlander handles cargo. As it turns out, the Outlander's cargo capacity is very good for its class. Here in the front for small item storage you have the typical center console and cup holders, but in the back; that's where cargo space really stands out.

Cargo space here in the rear of the Outlander is actually very good for the class. Behind the third row of seats there are 14.

9 cubic feet of cargo space. Now that really doesn't sound like very much, it's enough or maybe a row of grocery bags or a couple of carry-on suitcases, but for a compact SUV with a third row, that's actually quite good space.

Now if you don't get the third row or if you fold down your optional third row there is 39 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, and that's actually quite a lot for the class. There is plenty of room for large suitcases for a road trip, and we are even able to fit this large box in the back without folding the second row, and that's something we can't say for other compact SUVs that we have tested.

Now if you do fold the second row down, you have 72.

6 cubic feet of cargo space. Again, that's quite a lot for the class, but beyond the extra space that the Outlander has compared to the competition, it also has some nice cargo features like this flat folding tailgate.

It folds down while the main tailgate folds up, and folding it down not only gives you a nice seat, which can hold up to 400 pounds, but it also makes it easier to load cargo in, because you don't have to lift it as high.
