Richard Posluszny: The Porsche Boxster Spyder is a pure driving car. Car reviewers call it a door to drive in a fitting addition to Porsche's iconic line up. But just because it's a great driver's car, it doesn't mean it's a great car for everyone.
The funny thing about the Boxster Spyder is that it costs more then the regular Boxster, but you literally get less for your money depending on what your priorities are. The comforts are the tradeoffs you make for mind-blowing performance. If you still want the performance, but also want a more comfortable and livable interior, try out the Porsche Boxster or Boxster S. They not only cost less than the Spyder but have more standard features and convertible tops that don't require as much attention as the Spyder's. Plus, they're almost as much fun to drive. If you want performance and nothing else, go for the Lotus Elise. Like the Boxster Spyder, it's a barebone's drop top that is meant for screaming down the track, not dropping the kids off at daycare. While the Elise doesn't have the Boxster Spyder's classic good looks, it does start at about $14,000 less and gets to 60 just as fast. Porsche purists are going to hate me for recommending this, but here it goes. If you're looking for more power and you want to sacrifice a little bit of hailing to get it, go for the Chevrolet Corvette Z06. It's starts at about $10,000 more than a Boxster Spyder, but it also makes an additional 200 horsepower and has a top speed of nearly 200 miles an hour. Porsche enthusiasts may turn up their nose at the Chevrolet badge but on the Z06, they won't to be able not see them in your review. When they can see at the Boxster Spyder, Porsche engineers took a quintessential driver's car and reduced it to its Ss. The result is that the car has near perfect balance and handling. The Boxster Spyder is light and it has ample power for almost any situation you can throw at it. What it doesn't have is a lot of practicality. Its top requires extra attention and it's not really comfortable enough for daily driving. If you can afford to have a car that's purely a toy, go for the Boxster Spyder. But if you want a driver's car that you can live with every day, go for the Bosxter or Boxster S.
