Russell H. Greenfield, M.D. is the Director of Greenfield Integrative Healthcare (GIH), PLLC and President of Greenfield Consulting (GC), LLC.
He completed his residency training in emergency medicine at Harbor / UCLA Medical Center and subsequently entered into an administrative / teaching fellowship at the same institution. He moved to Charlotte, NC and became involved in the emergency medicine residency program at Carolinas Medical Center, where he was honored as the inaugural recipient of the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. He then became one of the first four physicians worldwide to graduate from the Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at The University of Arizona College of Medicine under the direct instruction of Dr. Andrew Weil.
Dr. Greenfield returned to NC to become the founding medical director of Carolinas Integrative Health, a freestanding center in Charlotte owned and operated by the Carolinas HealthCare System. He was a consultant to the Federation of State Medical Boards in the development of national model guidelines for the use of complementary and alternative therapies, and is co-author of Healthy Child, Whole Child (2nd ed. HarperCollins, 2009).
Dr. Greenfield maintains a private consultative medical practice in Charlotte, consults with media and industry on integrative health initiatives, and lectures widely. He is the editor of Alternative Medicine Alert, a monthly newsletter designed for healthcare professionals. He also directs the creation of wellness information for shoppers for Harris Teeter, Inc.
Professional affiliations include Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and Visiting Assistant Professor at The University of Arizona College of Medicine.
In his spare time he likes nothing more than spending time with his wife and children. His personal interests are baseball and anything related to The Lord of the Rings.
Top Allergy Fighting Tips
Dr. Russell Greenfield breaks down the science behind allergic reactions and shares his top tips for reducing allergy symptoms.

Dr. Russell Greenfield: Allergies affect a lot of us, whether it's year around or seasonal, your immune system is mistakenly identifying harmless particles as intruders, setting off alarms that result in plenty of discomfort. You may be able to decrease your inflammatory response to allergens by eating the Mediterranean way, with lots of vegetables, fruits, and foods high in Omega3 fats, like walnuts, Alaskan Salmon and ground Flax seed. These foods help decrease inflammation. Avoid foods that can worsen inflammation, like the pro-inflammatory trans fats and polyunsaturated oils found in many processed or take out foods.
Milk proteins can also make symptoms worse. So try a week or two without dairy products to see if this makes a difference for you. Be sure to drink lots of water to keep your mucous membranes in fighting order. Take control of your environment. Limit your time outdoors during peak allergy season. To keep pollen outside the house, leave your shoes at the door, wash your face and hands when you come in and shower upon off before bedtime.
Consider adding a High-Efficiency Particulate Air, or HEPA filter to your heating and cooling system. Limit pets to certain rooms of the house and have your house inspected for mold that might need to be removed. Try using a Neti Pot, a ceramic vessel filled with homemade saline solution. Clean out your nasal passages once in the morning and once at night when you are having symptoms and once a week when you are symptom free.
More importantly, if you believe you have allergies, speak with your doctor. Allergy symptoms are often confused with other disorders, so you want to make sure you know what you are dealing with.
Prescription medications may be of help, but try to avoid decongestants, which provide very little benefit and far too many side-effects.
