Dr. Guy Eakin: Glaucoma is a degenerative eye disease that affects 17 million people worldwide. Well, glaucoma can affect anyone at any age; it is a leading cause of blindness among African Americans and Hispanics in the United States. An Estimated 3.
3 million Americans will have glaucoma by the year 2020.
Glaucoma is actually a group of eye disorders that leads to damage of the optic nerve. Called the "the sneak thief of sight," it has no symptoms until irreversible vision loss has occurred. In fact, vision experts believe that half of those affected by glaucoma may not even know it, since there are usually no symptoms in its earlier stages. By the time a person notices something is wrong, the disease has already caused considerable damage. Vision lost by glaucoma cannot be regained. About 10% of the people with the disease are blind. The only way to know if you have glaucoma is to visit your eye doctor, and eye examination can accurately diagnose glaucoma.
For people suffering from glaucoma, sight-saving treatments are available, especially if the disease is discovered in time.
