Richard Posluszny: If you are in the market for an SUV with serious off-roading capabilities, you are probably not going to be doing laps around a race track. Although, testers say it drives well on the road, it first comes on a muddy rocky trail.
One of the Grand Cherokee's strong points is its choice of motors. There is a 3.
6 liter V6 that produces 290 horsepower and there is also a 5.
7 liter V8 that makes 360 horsepower. Now the V6 has more than enough power to get you where you need to go but if you need to tow more than $5000 pounds, the V8 is the motor you really want. However, most reviewers agreed that the V6 should suit anybody's daily needs. It really comes down, if you need that towing capability.
The Grand Cherokee isn't the SUV to buy if you want to save at the pump. Stack the Grand Cherokee's fuel economy up against any other SUV in its class, and you will see this isn't an area where the Grand Cherokee shines. The EPA estimates 16 city, 23 highway well equipped with a 6 cylinder motor and 2-Wheel Drive. Step up through the V8 and you are looking at 14 city; 20 highway.
And if 4-Wheel Drive is on your shopping list, play not filing up more frequently. V6 equipped 4-Wheel Drive Grand Cherokee gets 16 city, 22 highway while V8 44 are the thirstiest getting only 13 city, 19 highway. These figures are better than the last generation Grand Cherokee but there is still nothing to write home about.
Compared to other off-road SUVs they are above average but if you are not going off-road, a crossover will get you much farther between fill-ups. Taking into account the fuel economy on the V6, and what reviewers say about V8's power, which is hampered by a five speed transmission, it seems that unless you really need those extra ponies, the 6 cylinder Grand Cherokee is the wiser buy.
Although most off-road SUV's aren't that what finally get on the road, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is different and that's because it has these adjustable settings that's right on the centre console. When you have the car in auto mode, the steering feels okay, it's not too sharp, it's not too dull but then when you put into sport mode, you feel the car hunkered down, and then it gets really tight, it feels very stable and put together very well. It's a really nice feeling.
When you are on a highway, it's a very comfortable cruise, thanks to the air suspension and it's not that noisy, there is not that much wind noise or anything or anything like that. You can do 80, and not even think about it in Jeep Grand Cherokee, it's pretty cool! A lot of reviewers have a question though, would it be as good on rough pavement or bad kind of pot hole ridden areas? After experiencing it, this car drives great on-road, it drives great off-road, it does it all.
Most reviewers say the Grand Cherokee's power and it's off-roading capability are it's strong points but poor gas miles is where it comes up short. Then again that's typical for an off-road SUV. With slightly better fuel economy and ample power from the V6 most testers agree the V8 is only necessary if you are planning on doing a lot of towing. Take a look at our other videos to learn about the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
