Setting New Year Goals
Follow Ric Edelman's four simple steps to stick with your New Years Resolution.
Transcripts
Ric Edelman: Have you made a New Year's Resolution? Survey show that most are related to money and more than half of all resolutions are broken before the end of January; if you're struggling with making New Year's Resolution stick, follow these four simple steps. First, set a positive goal. If you say, I will not spend money, you've made a negative goal, and that forces you to think about all the things that you shouldn't be doing, instead of what you should be doing. So set a positive goal like I will save to buy a house. This way, you focus your energy on saving which is something you should be doing, instead of not spending which is something you shouldn't do.
Second, set a date for achieving your goal. A goal is not a goal until you set a date for it, and choose a realistic date. If it's not realistic, you'll become discouraged, and quit. Third, write down your goal, until you see it in front of you, it's not real. Take photos of your goal to the bathroom mirror, your refrigerator door, your car's steering wheel, your computer monitor as a reminder. Finally, stay focused. Keep your goal in front of you. If your goal is to buy a home, tour model homes, watch home TV shows, read home magazines. So rather than not spending, you'll be preparing to buy something really special. Follow these four steps, and you'll be amazed at how easy it is to fulfill your New Year's Resolutions.
