Mitch Baker: Scorching summer sun can be deadly to your lawn and garden. The best way to keep it fresh and green is to water it properly. So hand-watering using a water-wand is still one of the best methods of delivering water directly to the root zone of our plants. Watering early in the morning, it's the best time of the day to water so that the water is in place, and the plants have time to take it up before mid-day, the hottest part of the day. Now, around some of our smaller ornamental trees, we can use gator bags or tree gators, a slow drip of water, 15 to 20 gallons, over a five to seven day period, just make sure you're refilling these gator bags regularly. A gator bag empty, laying around the base of the tree may actually be preventing rainwater from getting to the root zone of the tree. Soaker hoses are another great way to deliver water directly to the root zones of our plants, and these recycled rubber hoses weep water along the entire length, getting that water right down into the root zone with very little evaporation. As long as they are properly snaked through the flowerbeds, so that we are getting water to the entire area. Now, watering our lawns, the Sprinkler is still probably the most efficient way to do that. An Oscillating Sprinkler, needs to run 60 to 90 minutes to deliver about an inch of water to the turf root zone. Doing that once a week is typically sufficient keep our lawns looking fresh green. So if you follow these watering tips, your lawn and garden should look fresh and green through the whole season.
