Apple expert Allison Parker explains how an apple a day really does keep the doctor away.
Transcripts
Allison Parker: The health benefits of apples and apple products state back as long ago as medieval times.
Apples provide essential Vitamins, Minerals, and Fibre, which helps prevent chronic disease. The dietary guidelines for Americans recommend that we eat more fruits and vegetables than from any other food group. For adults, that's about three and a half to six and a half cups per day for better health. One of the biggest mistakes consumers make when they get home is storing their apples on the counter-top like this. The best way to store your apples is in the fridge, preferably in the fruit and vegetable compartment. Away from strong odored vegetables, if stored this way, they can be kept fresh for up to 46 weeks. And whenever possible, don't peel that apple, two thirds of the fiber and most of the antioxidants are found in the peel.
Recent studies have linked apples with weight loss; helps prevent heart disease, cancer, Type-2 diabetes and even asthma. As well as improving immunity and digestive help.
Thanks to this soluble Fibre found in apples called Pectin. They truly are the super fruit for everyone. An Apple a day keeps the doctor away.
