Dog trainer Leigh Siegfried shares a few simple steps for teaching a dog how to walk correctly with a leash.
Transcripts
Leigh Siegfried: Today we're talking about how to teach your dog to walk politely on a leash. Many folks think that their dog should just not pull on a leash. However, it's totally normal dog behavior for your dog to be sniffling, and forging, and gathering information when they're outside. Walking next to you is not a normal behavior; it's just as much of a trick, as training your dog to do anything.
So it's really up to us to give the dog feedback about what behavior we like. And ideally we like the dog walking beside us, and not pulling on leash. With passive healing all you are doing is you're walking with your dog on a leash, you're not pulling them, you're just simply changing directions frequently. The more unpredictable you are; the better.
What usually happens is your dog will start to go, woo, what is this person doing? Where are they going? And they start to watch you, when that happens and you notice that they're actually starting to follow where you're going, you start to reward that was small bits of food, telling them, good, and then giving him a treat. Now the dog understands that they are actually working with you not just pulling you around. And practice teaching your dog to walk on a loose leash in really short sessions. Remember that walking your dog on leash doesn't have to be a battle of wills. If you're frustrated, the dog will undoubtedly be frustrated. You want to make training as fun as possible for them. Have fun training in a real world!
