Justin Mcnuall: One of most notorious forms of driver distraction on the roads today is that ever going in since drivers text messaging or emailing behind the wheel. In addition to significant cognitive distraction involved, using a handheld communications device for text messaging, emailing, or surfing the Internet requires your driver to take hands off the wheel and eyes off the road.

Research has shown this is never a safe activity, and should never be attempted. It may even increase crash risk as much as 23 times. Here are some tips to avoid text messaging while behind the wheel. First, just make the commitment not to do it. Commit to not reading, sending, or writing text messages while driving. It's just too dangerous.

You can always rely of one time warn feature it's already built in to every phone its Power button. Turning off your phone before you drive and even just putting it far out of reach can help keep you from being tempted to use it along the road. Once you arrive, you can turn on your phone, and then you can text as much as you like.

Recruit a passenger to help manage your text messaging for you. Someone who will read it and reply if need be. If you feel that you must check or respond to a text message immediately, pull off the road and safely stop the car before responding. Remember be safe behind the wheel, be social off the road.
