Nichole Ferrigno: Hi! My name is Nichole Ferrigno. I will be joined today by Elizabeth Evelyn. We are going to show you how to make Christmas tree ornament cookies. This is an edible cookie, but it can also double as an ornament. We are going to start with one stick of unsalted softened butter. To that we are going to add one cup of granulated sugar. Okay. Now, to this mixture we are going to add one large egg and one teaspoon of vanilla extract. So we are mixing on medium speed until the egg is fully incorporated, and then we are going to add our dry ingredients, which are two cups of all-purpose flour, quarter teaspoon of salt, and half a teaspoon of baking powder. And we are mixing on low speed; we don't want to overwork the dough, until the dough gathers into a bowl.

Now, once the dough is gathered mostly into a bowl, we are going to take it out of the bowl and we are going to go ahead and pack it into plastic wrap, and we are going to go ahead and press it down into a disk and then chill it for about an hour. What I have here in this bowl are crushed pieces of any clear hard candy; Jolly Ranchers are good, because they have a lot of color to them. Go ahead and get those ready and you will have them all set for the next step. And we are now going to roll the cookie dough out on a lightly floured surface. You are going to roll these cookies to about half an inch or so. And for today's purposes, we have selected a Christmas tree cookie cutter. With this particular recipe I would say it's fairly important that you use a silicon baking sheet. What we are going to do with this cookie is cut a center out of it and we are going to fill the center with the candy pieces. And the heat of the oven will just really melt the candies to liquid. And then when you pull them out of the oven, the candy will reset itself to its hardened texture. So we will go ahead now and put these in the oven. I have preheated it to about 350. We will bake till they are golden brown, say 15 minutes or so. So I have pulled our Christmas tree ornament cookies out of the oven, and right away if you are planning to make them into an ornament, go head and cut yourself a little triangle, a little hole, just something that a string could be strung through, so that you could put it onto your tree. Allow these to cool for about half an hour and then you will be able to put them on your tree or eat them up. Happy holidays to you!
