Julie Epstein: In this double-dip recession, most of us need a vacation, but can't afford to take one. However, there are several unforgettable trips that won't break the bank. Avoid lodging cost altogether by going camping. Taking advantage of our State and National parks is a cheap family friendly option and while Yosemite and Yellowstone are frequently recommended, both see cold winters with lots of snow.

At this time of year, you're better off looking farther south to places like Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California or Everglades National Park in Florida. If you are not game for roughing it, still keep an eye on southern destinations.

Travelers love the cheap hotels. Quaint neighborhoods in Dixie charm of Savannah, Georgia, and vacationers aiming for excitement without additional cost should head to Americas live music meccas. Both Austin and Nashville host tons of bars and clubs that feature live entertainment, and because the two are also home to thousands of university students, you can easily find cheap eats.

If you're in search of a bit more history, Washington DC is the place to be. The Smithsonian Museum and the National Mall are open to the public free of charge, plus the cooler temperatures will drive towards out and room rates down.
