How to Highlight Unique Work Experience
President and CEO of Job.com Brian Alden discusses looking for jobs outside your current field and how translate your current skill set into new and exciting opportunities.
Transcripts
Brian Alden: In an uncertain job market, you may find yourself looking for employment in new fields. This can be a great opportunity if you need to translate your current skill set into new and exciting current opportunities. First, the ability to work in a high pressure and fast pace environment is an important skill that translates across many careers; from serving at a restaurant to working in a corporate environment.
You should think about the skills you posses and how they can be applied to the position you're interested in. Problem solving is another key skill that translates across the job market. Employers are always looking for someone who can take a problem and find a solution whether this would be pleasing an unhappy customer, resolving a tricky situation, or coming up with a better way to run the things more efficiently.
Communication in relationship building is another transferable skill that you can use to your advantage. Think of ways you're able to forge relationships in a previous job and apply those skills in a new way, and finally, don't undervalue volunteer work. This shows a prospective employer that you have the enthusiasm for work and you're a well-rounded individual, and most importantly that you'll be great asset to their team.
