iFred is a 501c3 organization aiming to shed a positive light on depression throughout the world in order to prevent the onset, research causes and treatments, and reposition the disease in a positive way to eradicate stigma. iFred's primary goal is to increase the number of people getting treatment, as according to the World Health Organization currently less than 25% of those with diagnosable depression in developed countries and less than 10% in developing countries are getting the help they deserve and need. Depression is up to 90% treatable, so by increasing the number getting treatment we will reduce costs associated with it, suicides, and the overall drain on society.

Mandy Eppley: Hi! I am Mandy Eppley.

Tammy Starling: And I am Tammy Starling.

Mandy Eppley: And we are here on behalf of iFred at The Respite, A Center for Grief & Hope.

Tammy Starling: We are here to talk with you about how to create meaning during the holidays when we are grieving. Because our holiday culture can sometimes be really isolating, it's important for us to create moments of meaning during the holidays. And the first thing we want to do is select a theme and it could be something like the courage that you have seen yourself or someone else have. It could be some aspect of your holiday tradition that you are seeing very differently now.

Or it could be something very simple like grandpa had a love for animals or for flowers. So let's do something with that. For example, going to the Humane Society in honor of grandpa and his love for animals and doing some volunteer work there. But involve others to join you and create this moment of meaning for the holidays for you.

Mandy Eppley: A way to support yourself and create meaning during the holiday season, is to have symbols around you and your environment that support you and encourage you. For example, there maybe an image that means a lot to you or a piece of jewelry or a piece of art, something that can remind you that you are okay and that wherever your at is okay, something that inspires you and brings you hope and remind you that you are going to get through this time and that you have every right to feel the way that you feel. Use symbols as the way to support yourself during the holiday season.

Tammy Starling: If you would like more information about the topics of depression and grief, please go to depression.

org or therespite.

Mandy Eppley: If you are in crisis, or feeling stuck in your grief or in danger, please don't hesitate to reach out and get support for yourself. You deserve that. The resource that we are offering and suggesting is 1-800-442-HOPE. This will route you to a counselor that you can speak live to.

Tammy Starling: We really hope that this information and these suggestions are helpful to you and your holiday season.

Mandy Eppley: And may you have a peaceful holiday season!
