Jennifer Davidson: We are with AAA, and today we will tell you a little bit about child passenger safety. Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death and injury for all children. Fortunately, there is something that we can do to prevent this.

Car seats when used properly reduce the risk of injury by 71-82% and Booster seats can reduce injuries by 45% when compared to the seat belt alone.

Jennifer Ryan: Learning how to correctly choose and install a car seat is key, since nearly three out of four car seats are installed incorrectly. Common errors include not using the right seat for the child, loose attachment of the car seat in the vehicle or not having the retainer clip at the proper level.

Jennifer Davidson: There are many different types of car seats; so choose the appropriate seat for your child's age, weight and height. Make sure it will fit in your vehicle and that you will use it correctly each time. You should be familiar with the vehicle owner's manual, as well as the car seat manufacturer's instructions before you install it in your car.

Jennifer Ryan: Keep in mind, there are two ways to install child safety seats in vehicles, using either the seat belt or the LATCH system, which stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. Never use both systems to install the seat at the same time.

Jennifer Davidson: It is recommended that all children under the age of 13 ride in the back seat.
