Dr. Tina Alster: Hi, I am Dr. Tina Alster, Director Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery. Today I am going to talk to you about skin care in children. Did you know that sun damage in children is one of the leading causes for skin cancer in adults? Not only your children's skin more sensitive to the damage by suns rays, but on average people gets most of their skin cancer causing rays by the time they turn 18. Make sure your kids don't go out without sun protection. Even a single blistering sun burn in the childhood years will lead to an increase in skin cancer as an adult. Freckles are actually a sign of sun damage. The darkening pigment shows that the skin has been damaged from the sun. Teach your children good skin care habits at home by the use of daily cleanser, moisturizer, with sun protection factor and the night cream. Protect their skin early on with regular skin care and SPF.
