Dr. Tina Alster: Hi, I am Dr. Tina Alster with the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery. Today I am going to give you some good skin care tips just for men. There are hundreds of good skin care products out on the market and some of them are designed specifically for men. But it is very confusing to go to the drug store even for me as a dermatologist I have a hard time picking through all of the products. So let me give you some pointers.
Young men do not typically receive as much instruction as do women with taking good care of their skin. So many times as they develop into teens and adults, they end up using whatever skin care products are lying around the house. Now this might be okay if there is not a problem but for the most part, teenage boys and then subsequently men don't develop good skin care habits. Not caring for the skin means that many men end up incurring much more sun damage to their skin than women do by the time they end up turning into adults. I advice my male patients to start with a good basic skin care routine including a cleanser, a sun screen and a moisturizer. To this basic routine, you can add such therapeutic products as antioxidants or even retinoic acid in order to reverse the signs of aging. It's not hard to take care of your skin. You just need the right tools and the right daily regimen.
