Dr. Tina Alster: Hi, I'm Dr. Tina Alster with the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery. Today I'd like to talk to you about how to improve skin surface texture irregularities or imperfections like wrinkles and scarring or blotchiness with laser skin resurfacing.
With intrinsic aging over the years and also sun damage, the skin starts to lose its elasticity and appear wrinkled and blotchy overtime. Laser skin resurfacing works on two levels, the first is superficially or on top of the skin to remove blotchiness and dullness from the skin's surface.
The other way it works is deeper down to fill in acne scars or other traumatic scars and to fill in wrinkles by tightening the dermis, which is the second layer of skin.
The newest skin lasers involve various systems that help us improve skin imperfections without the prolonged recovery that we use to experience with some of the older laser systems.
If your skin can use some smoothing out or improvement of its texture and tone, what you should do is consider undergoing laser skin resurfacing.
