Dr. Tina Alster: Hi, I'm Dr. Tina Alster with the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery. Today I'd like to talk to you about another option to smooth out wrinkles of aging skin.
If you're concerned about wrinkling and sagging, a very popular treatment option these days is toxin treatment. Many lines or wrinkles that occur in people's faces are not only related to loss of elasticity from chronic sun exposure but from the fact that we end up using a lot of the muscles in our face timing again throughout the years.
With repetitive muscle contractions, many times people form frown lines or squint lines around their eyes. These are the type of movement lines that can be improved with toxin treatment. Also, neck lines that give that aging look or sagging look to the neck. It can also be used to stop excessive perspiration under the arms, on the palms or even on the feet.
Toxin treatments work by blocking the signal that the nerves send to the muscles, so that the muscles do not contract and therefore the wrinkle will smooth out.
While it may sound scary to undergo toxin treatment, you can rest assure that this has been considered to be safe and effective by the Food and Drug Administration. In fact only the smallest amount of toxin is injected into the muscle so that the muscle no longer contracts. It does not spread through your body or do anything terrible to the rest of your system.
There are many benefits to toxin treatment. One of them is that they're very easy to perform. They're highly effective, they're very safe and I use them in conjunction with multiple treatments that I perform in my office like laser skin resurfacing and filler injections.
If you would like to see fewer wrinkles on your face or prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place you may want to consider toxin treatment as this is a fast, easy and effective way to do so.
