Home Organization - Hauling Items using a Handcart and Dolly

Hi, I am Nick Friedman, with College Hunks Hauling Junk, the junk removal specialist, and today, we are talking about some organizing strategies, as well as safe lifting and moving techniques. We just talked about how to safely lift an item off the ground, as well as carry that item and place it down, but if you are moving an item a large distance, we recommend using a piece of equipment called a handcart. What you are going to do is bring the handcart over square to the item that you are working with.

Sometimes, its better to have a friend or buddy help you out with this, but you can also do it on your own. You are going to tip the item back, then you are going to slide the handcarts ledge all the way underneath the item. Now, if you tried to tip this thing back, the item is going to fall off, so, we recommend tying it to the handcart using a cord, or a bungee cord. So, what we are going to do here, we wrap that all the way around, so now its secure. As you tip it back on to the handcart, you are going to put your foot in the middle of the handcart, hand on the front of the item, and tip it straight back. So now, you can move by pulling it towards you and pushing it forward. You want to try to keep your back straight, your legs bent, your shoulders square to the item, if you are making a turn, and in order to set the item back down, you want to do the same way that you lifted up. You want to hold the front of the item, put your foot on the back of the handcart, set it down slowly, and thats how you utilize a handcart to help move heavy items. Next, we are going to talk about going how to move heavy items using a floor square dolly. So, you want to set the floor dolly on the ground, next to item that you are moving. Its always good to have a partner or a buddy to help you out, which you can also do it on your own. So, what you are going to do is, you are going to tip the item back, and you are going to tip the floor dolly, and get it underneath, and then you are going to tip forward to get the item on to the floor dolly initially, and just slide it over to try and get the weight as evenly centered as possible. Now, you can easily move the item around as its evenly balanced on the floor dolly, but if you come to an impediment, item could easily tip off. So, what you want to do, is lift from the bottom of the floor dolly, and also push from the bottom of the floor dolly, to get over whatever impediments maybe on the ground. So, thats how you safely move items using a floor dolly. Next, we are going to talk about organizing strategies for your garage as well as your attic.
