Bill Frishman: Hi I am Bill Frishman with BGB Builders. Today our project is building a closet. Our next step is to hang and set a door. Now lets take a look. Ive already put the door in place. The first thing that you want to make sure off is that the door is set plumb and square. Thats the most important thing when you are setting a door. So what we are going to do is put our level, on our casing on our trim here. And we going to make sure that were leveled, both across the closet and front to back.

This will ensure that the door operates properly. So I will put the level on this side of the trim as well and once I am sure as you can see that the bubble is in between the lines, I will go ahead nail it which I have already done with its finish nail, and counter sinking in to the trim so that you can get putty on it for the painter. The next step is to shim the hinges. Now, what I have done here is taken a wood shim and shimmed above each hinge. This will ensure that the door is tight to the rough opening, if you remember that we left the rough opening bigger than the door, so that it had enough room to be set square in case our framing wasnt square.

So now I was left to do is to shim the door, tight to the framing so that theres no gap. I have already done that and I have nailed it above each hinge. Now I have once again set my level on the door frame and its leveled. I do that in all three sides I do that on the head, I do it on the side. Now the last thing I want to make sure is that my review is the same across all sides of the door.

So, we start on this side, the top of the door and the left side of the door. Our review is all the same and you can see that the door operates properly. Now, the last piece to put in, what I do is, I will break my shims off but there will still be enough shim left to hold the door but Ill be able to apply the back casing or Split Jam as its called. So I just snap the shim off and I will grab the Split Jam. Now apply this Split Jam into our Jam that we already have set. And well take our nail gun and well nail accordingly. As you can see the door operates properly, doesnt hit the frame at all. Now, the next thing well move on to is installing some base trim. Now the base trim needs to be set up for what ever flooring youre going to use. If you are going to use ceramic hard wood, that is three quarters of an inch carpet with a big pad is about the same, you can use a little less if you are going to have a small pad but if you are going to use vinyl trim, you definitely want to set it down may be just a quarter inch off the floor, so that you dont have a big gap but you definitely, if you are going to use hard wood or ceramic you want to come up, or else your door would be hitting the flooring.

Same thing with the base, you want to hold it up, I have made a block, thats three quarters of an inch big and Ive placed it underneath the trim. What Im going to do here, I have already cut this to fit. If you are going to install base trim you just measure 13-and-a-half for this piece, you need a Compound Miter Saw or at least a Miter Saw. Compound is a bigger unit that will allow you to cut things bigger than base like crown but for this all you need is a Miter Saw and what I have done is put it up in place, set it up three quarters inch off the floor and then you are going want to nail it. I do the same thing here on the other side. Now this side had a corner so what I did was mark fourteen inches was what I found to be the corner and I cut it on a 45. So I used my Miter box and I set it at 45 degrees and I used my measurement of 14 inches as the inside measurement. So all I had to remember was when I was cutting with my Miter Saw to have the saw cut on the back of the trim, as that the inside mark of 14 inches, so that the back of this trim is 14 inches long. The face of the trim is a bit longer, its may be 14-and-quarter. So well do the same thing, use our block and just attach our trim, same thing on the corner.

Now, I have cut this piece exact opposite way. I have cut it two an inside corner. The outside face is longer which is the same as the other one. So I have cut this in the exact same way, its 45, I have had to cut it in the 45 as well so that when you place it as you can see it meets up and creates a nice fit. There you go, makes a nice corner right there and I have installed my base trim. Now the last step is to put the door knob on.
