Lucy McCausland remembers her first pet, Muffy, a small dog her family loved when she and her sisters were children. Years later her love of animals led her to take up horseback riding, and raising dogs and cats of her own. As Lucy developed her career, managing large retail stores, serving as CFO for a large retail chain, and as VP of Finance for a major catalogue retailer, she also developed a strong desire to combine her business talents with her love of animals. And in 2003, she opened a.k.a. spot, in the Clarendon section of Arlington, the hottest neighborhood in the DC metropolitan area.
Pet boutique, doggy grocery, and doggy self-wash, a.k.a. spot has outgrown its original location, and now has a new home just a few blocks away in a larger, more comfortable space. The Bark magazine has called a.k.a. spot "The Ralph Lauren of pet boutiques," and the shop is widely known as one of the very finest retailers of unique, premium pet supplies in the United States. In addition to its retail offerings, a.k.a. spot also serves the community, hosting regular adoption days, sponsoring local animal welfare organizations, scheduling annual portrait sessions for customers with acclaimed photographer Amanda Jones, and coordinating the annual Howl-o-ween doggy parade and costume contest through Clarendon.
Hosting this annual event has provided Lucy with a great education on costume planning and preparation, with a strong emphasis on safety, creativity, and finding the right costume for each and every pet. Each year the event grows bigger and better, and, while it's hard work pulling it all together, it's also very rewarding to see people and pets bonding and interacting, making new friends and coming up with dazzling new costumes.

Lucy McCausland: Hi I am Lucy McCausland from a.

a. Spot. I am here today with Jessica and Stuart big(ph) and Ducky(ph). We would like to talk about how to dress your big dog for Halloween costume contest or parade, and one of the things about the big dogs is that they always get left out of all of the cute apparel. So, if you are planning to buying a store bought costume for your big dog, that can happen for a number of reasons. You may not feel like making one or have time to make one of your own, you may not have that creative edge, but if you take your dog with you to shop for the costumes thats the best way to get the proper fit et cetera.
Typically, the way to measure a dog for a costume is not unlike measuring them for dog coat. The measurement is from the collar to the top of the tail in either inches or centimeters, but again its best just to take the dog and try the costumes on. One of the things you want to consider is, can the dog perform all the bodily functions in the costume that it does on a regular walks. The dog needs to be able to drink water, and he needs to be able to pee. You have to be able to have the same control on the walk or on the parade with the dog in costume as you do a regular day.
So, I always suggest get the costume, put the harness and collar or lead on the that you use on a normal walk and may be do a drive run around the neighborhood or just make sure that its some thing that the dog can move in. The costume should not bind the dog in any way. It should not choke the dog in any way, and there shouldnt be anything on the costume that the dog can eat that would be some thing that would cause the dog to choke or might be poisonous.
And so these are the just a few little ways to get your big dog dressed up for the festivities and again just go try them on and then give it a dry run and have fun on the parade.
