Patsieann Misiti: Hi, I am Patsieann Misiti with the Alexandria Fire Department in Alexandria, Virginia. Today, we are talking about fire safety. Now, we are going to learn what to do if your clothes catch on fire. Stop, drop, and roll. Are you ready Brian?
Like most of us, fire needs oxygen to survive. If your clothes catch on fire, we want the fire to go out. So never run, always roll. Brain is going to demonstrate how to stop, drop, and roll. Okay Brain, your clothes are on fire, drop to the ground, cover your face, and roll back and forth until the fire goes out. Alright, good job. If you do suffer burns, make sure you treat them with cold water. If the burns are serious, make sure to seek medical attention.
Next, we are going to talk about how to operate a fire extinguisher.

About Stop Drop and Roll
I really liked the demonstration. However, it is no longer standard practice to teach chilren to cover their face. If their clothes are on fire, and they cover their face with hot or burning hands, their hands can fuse to their face. It is better to keep hands by your sides.
