Rock Schuler was most recently the Rector (Pastor) of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Olney, Maryland. He has served as an ordained minister of the Episcopal Church since 1990 after studying for the priesthood at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. He was awarded a Doctorate of Ministry in Congregational Development in 2002. In the course of his ministry, Rock has served on an Indian Reservation, in rural Wyoming, and in major suburban areas. In addition to pastoring the people of his congregation, he has been involved in community service projects to serve the homeless, refugees, and the addicted. He’s also been involved in international outreach projects in Latin America and Africa. Rock’s spiritual roots lie in the early Christian Church, in Native American spirituality, in the liturgical worship and traditions of the Episcopal Church, and most especially in his own personal relationship with the living Lord Jesus Christ. He appreciates the mystery and mysticism of the Christian faith while offering thanks for a lifelong and joyous love of Jesus. Rock, born in 1965, is from Wyoming, where he served his first two churches. He is married to Jennifer, whom he met while serving a parish outside of Philadelphia, and has two beautiful daughters, Leia and Rebecca. Rock is into science fiction and fantasy (especially "Battlestar Galactica," "Star Trek," "Lost," and "The Lord of the Rings"), movies, reading, kayaking/canoeing, hiking, and running.

Host: How do you pray?

Rock Schuler: That is a great question and one that was posed to Jesus on more than one occasion. Praying actually is just simple conversation. Just as we are talking right now, so we talk to God. We call this kind of conversational prayer simple prayer, not because it is less than other forms of prayer but because it is foundational to all types of prayer. And so we just have a simple conversation with God, we talk to God as we would talk to a friend or a relative, a trusted loved one. We share with God our thoughts, our dreams, our hopes, our frustrations, our fears, our anxieties, our angers, our worries, whatever is on our mind, we simply talk with God. Simple prayer, conversational prayer is the way God becomes our truest friend.

Due to the fact that this is a video for beginners, it does not extensively cover some items that were considered better suited to people with a more advanced web design/development skillset, such as the difference between HTML and XHTML, designing the look and feel of a site in programs like Adobe Photshop or Fireworks, and why it's so important to separate presentation from content.
  • Basic Tarot Card Reading It is my intention in this video to teach the basics of the Tarot. A lot of people want to know how to read the Tarot but are overwhelmed at the esoteric knowledge it encompasses. In addition, people want things simplified. In this video, I teach the Tarot with the consumer in mind who wants this information more concrete and basic. A kind of meat and potatoes approach. The Tarot is a wonderful tool to access higher states of consciousness. It assists us in attaining more more internal knowledge. Learning the Tarot is a way of reconnecting with our innermost being.

He discusses prayer and the ability to discern the Spirit in daily events, and about how to integrate spirituality into family and personal life. He brings out the distinctions between spirituality and religion, and talks about how to tell a healthy religious community from an unhealthy one. And he deals with some of the hard questions of life – how can a sense of God be found in the dark places, challenging circumstances, and tragedies of life. Overall, he affirms the desire of God for all people to live the joy of abundant life.
