Host: Why should I pray?

Rev. Dr. Rock Schuler: The question of why we should we pray gets right to the core of who we are as human beings. We have been created and St. Augustine and many other theologians have said with a hole at the center of our being, meaning we have been created with a hunger for the presence of God. God created us because God wanted to be in relationship. God being a God of love wanted to be in love. We are created to be in relationship with God. When we fulfill the purpose of our creation we lead happier, a fuller, more fulfilled lives even in times of stress, even in times of anxiety and worry and difficulty, even in time of darkness.

When we are in relationship with God, we know that our life has greater purpose, greater meaning, a greater context. We know that our life on this earth is not all there is to life and we know that the trials and tribulations that we face here are not the final end of our story. Praying brings us into relationship with God and the relationship with God fulfills us as human beings now and forever.
