Franklin Taggart is a guitarist, singer/songwriter, recording engineer and record producer based in Silver Spring, MD. He's played guitar since 1975 and has been involved in some aspect of performing, recording and composing ever since then. He also is a well known guitar teacher in the Washington, DC area. He has been nominated for many WAMMIE awards from the Washington Area Music Association, winning the Traditional Folk Instrumentalist category in 2001. His first CD Falling All the Way has received excellent reviews from a variety of sources and was also nominated for seven WAMMIE's.

Franklin Taggart: Hi, I am Franklin Taggart. We have been talking about setting up a home recording system, using your computer and some other hardware equipment. We are all set up and ready do go. Our sequencer is open. We have already recorded a drum loop and a base loop and what I am going to do now is to record a short vocal. I have put on my headphones because we have to tune the speakers down whenever you have got a live microphone. You can t have the speaker open and the mike on at the same time, where also you get feedback and so what I am going to do is sing a little bit of snippet that goes along with the drum loop and the base loop and then I will turn the speakers on and show you what we have got. It s easy to record yourself at home, yeah, it s so easy to record yourself at home. All right, I have recorded now just a short bit of part and that is going to show up in my other screen over here. Now, let's listen to how that sounds altogether. Yeah, we can t listen to that without the speakers being on, so let me turn the speakers on and then we will be ready to go. It s easy to record yourself at home, yeah, it s so easy to record yourself at home. So, you get an idea, it s very easy to get started and I am going to do a little bit of editing on that last little bit. I didn t like the first part, so I am just going to slip edit it. What you can do is you just grab hold of the end there and take it to the point where you want it to end and it s already ready for you. So, there we have it. It s all ready to go and now I have recorded a short vocal and a drum loop and a base loop. Very easy. Recording at home is a very, very fun activity. It s one that I spend a lot of my time doing. Free time late at night as often as I can. There is a little bit of a learning curve, so what I would encourage you to do is to be very patient as you start to learn how to record at home and just take your time. Ask a lot of questions from people who know how to run the software and equipment that you have and just be prepared to learn quite a bit before you are making some really high quality recordings at home. It doesn t have to be difficult however and what I would encourage you to do, is to read a lot of books, talk to a lot of people and most important of all just spend time recording. The more you record the better you are going to get at it. So, it s easy to do. I hope you ve enjoyed our video series of setting up your own home recording studio. Just watched entire tutorial and took notes. I'm a bottom-wrung recording beginner and this has been very helpful! Now I need to finish buying what I still need and I will be ready to begin. Got the PC, Interface, Mics, Instruments, musical talent. Need the software, monitors, midi control surface and practice! I'll be back for more! Thanks again...very helpful.
