Greetings. My name is Seth Kibel and I am here to talk to you about the basics of getting started with the Saxophone. Before you begin, I should tell you a little bit about myself, so you know why I am qualified to be yacking at you from your computer for minutes at a time about the saxophone. I have been a professional musician all of my life. I started playing clarinet about 25, 26 years ago when I was about that big; picked up saxophone a few years later when I was 11 years and picked up quite a few instruments since then. In fact today, I can be seen playing a wide variety of instruments and I am hack at quite a few. Nonetheless, the saxophone remains one of my first and one of my truest loves. One of the truisms of music history of being a professional musician is that, if you like to work, it behooves you to play as many different types of music as possible and it is certainly the case of me. I play a lot of different styles of music, everything from classical to jazz, to blues, to rock, to German ompa. If someone will hire me to play it on my horn, I will do it. One of the bands I am probably most closely associated with is my Alternative Klezmer band, The Alexandria Kleztet. We blend traditional Jewish music with modern influences from jazz and rock and roll and classical and world music. You can find us all over the web and in probably most of your local record stores, if you still go to record stores. There are quite a few saxophones. I have got a few of them with me here today. The Baritone saxophone which has a nice MIDI sound. That is the saxophone Lisa Simpson plays most often. On the higher end of the spectrum the Alto saxophone, which is used a lot in jazz, Charlie Parker or Bird , one of the most famous jazz saxophonist, made this his instrument of choice. My personal favorite saxophone is one that is kind of in the middle, the Tenor saxophone. I will be doing most of demonstrating today on the tenor saxophone but all of the basic principles I am talking about can be applied to any saxophones in the saxophone family. To be sure, there are subtle differences in how you play them but the basics are all the same. So, we will get started in just a moment with the most important first step; putting your saxophone together.
