Rock Schuler was most recently the Rector (Pastor) of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Olney, Maryland. He has served as an ordained minister of the Episcopal Church since 1990 after studying for the priesthood at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. He was awarded a Doctorate of Ministry in Congregational Development in 2002. In the course of his ministry, Rock has served on an Indian Reservation, in rural Wyoming, and in major suburban areas. In addition to pastoring the people of his congregation, he has been involved in community service projects to serve the homeless, refugees, and the addicted. He’s also been involved in international outreach projects in Latin America and Africa. Rock’s spiritual roots lie in the early Christian Church, in Native American spirituality, in the liturgical worship and traditions of the Episcopal Church, and most especially in his own personal relationship with the living Lord Jesus Christ. He appreciates the mystery and mysticism of the Christian faith while offering thanks for a lifelong and joyous love of Jesus. Rock, born in 1965, is from Wyoming, where he served his first two churches. He is married to Jennifer, whom he met while serving a parish outside of Philadelphia, and has two beautiful daughters, Leia and Rebecca. Rock is into science fiction and fantasy (especially "Battlestar Galactica," "Star Trek," "Lost," and "The Lord of the Rings"), movies, reading, kayaking/canoeing, hiking, and running.

How do I achieve balance in my life?

Rock Schuler: Seeking a balance to life is arguably the greatest challenge that modern people face. How can we not be overwhelmed by a work? How can we not be overwhelmed by the materialism that is all around us? How can we find something of the spiritual nature of life? How can we find something of our relationships that are more than work? How do we find balance in our life?

Spirituality and rituals remind us that there is more to life than the material existence, than the daily grind of work. When we become immersed in our tradition, of spiritual rituals, in a religious tradition, we are constantly reminded that there is a greater part of life.

The first step to having a balanced life is to be reminded that there is more to life, to know that there is more to life. When we begin to understand that there is a spiritual part of life, we naturally seek to nurture that part of life. When we begin to understand that there is more to life than work, than the daily grind, than making enough money to earn a living, then we begin to pay more attention to the quality of our relationships, to the time we are spending with the people we love.

We begin to take more time to nurture ourselves, to care for our body and our spirit and our soul when we understand that we are holistic people, not just body only but embodied and flashed spirits. So the way to live a more balanced life is first of all to understand that there is more to life and then to nurture those aspects of life. Prayer, rituals, devotion, relationship that help balance our life
