Host: Is there an etiquette that I should follow while on a date?
Gloria MacDonald: There is definitely some etiquette around the date and a lot of this, guys, is on your shoulders. One of the things that I highly recommend is that as a guy, you try to be there first. Try to make sure you are at the coffee shop or wherever you are meeting, whether its a bar or a coffee shop, try to make sure you are there first and whatever you do, do not go ahead an order your drink or your coffee before the woman arrives. The woman really wants you to wait until she gets there and then you order together. If you really want to impress the woman, by all means, pay for her coffee or drink. Unfortunately, women subconsciously, are looking for a man who can provide for them and so, one of the ways that you men can show in a very small way that you can provide for them is by spending the money to buy the coffee or the drink.
Unfortunately, so many women, if the man doesnt buy the coffee or the drink, the woman thinks, He is cheap and she thinks that thats the way the man is going to be in everything for the rest of his life. So, particularly, if you find this woman an all attractive and you want to impress her, you absolutely should buy that first drink. It is just a tiny little thing but it goes a long way in impressing most women.
A couple of other things about dating etiquette for both men and women, by all means, turn your cell phones off. There is nothing that is more rude than to have somebody constantly talking on a cell phone, the very first time you meet them.
If you are waiting for an emergency phone call from a child or babysitter or something like that, thats a different story, but if you can afford to take 45 minutes on of your life to dedicate some undivided attention to a brand new person you are meeting without getting phone calls from friends and business phone calls, then you should plan an another time. Turn the cell phone off and really, truly give this person your undivided attention.
Another thing you might want to think about is really being able to make eye-contact with that person. Its really important that throughout the course of the conversation that you can make eye-contact with them. So we talked about finding out the color of their eyes but dont just look at their eyes once, say Okay, got blue eyes and never look again. Making eye-contact is hugely important. It is not to stare at the person, but from time to time you want to make sure you are making eye-contact to be open.
