Host: How do I identify scholarships and grants for my student?

Jerome Cole: There is a lot of scholarship money out there, lot of grants out there. The first place you want to start is at your high school, you want to let your counselor know that, you are interested in scholarships and grants. Usually that person would be able to direct you to a site on the Internet or some publications in the library or in the college reference section it will highlight these scholarships, so that s one.

Two, you want to go to the college that you are interested in and you want to ask that question, Do you have scholarships? Can you talk about scholarships that you have here on campus, grants here on campus? Three, you want to check with mom and dad with their employers, a lot of organization give out scholarships to the children of their employees. Another source is your place of worship, your Church, your Synagogue, do they have scholarship? So, you want to ask their.

The last thing that you want to do is, go on the Internet and there are couple of sites where you go on you typing the word scholarship or you tying the word grant and it will just give you a listing, their web services out their that will update you on -- this month there is this new scholarship, there is this new grant, so you want to use all of those sources and you want to do it early, you want to start the scholarship search in that summer after your Junior year going into your Senior year. So, start in June, July, August the months leading up to your senior years and then carry on. The two biggest sources of financial aid and scholarships and grants are going to be the federal government and your state government and the college or university. There the ones that are going to have the most money to give to you to finance your education.
