Host: What is an IEP?

Rene Hackney: That's an Individualized Education Plan; an IEP is given to every child who is eligible for special education services. IEPs outline a child's goals for the year or for the semester or for the year and then they break down how those goals will be met, what the teacher's role is, what the student's role is and the criteria for moving forward. IEPs are often looked year to year to determine that the placement is still appropriate and looking at how that child is progressing.
