Host: What is NAEYC?

Rene Hackney: NAEYC is the National Association for Education of Young Children. They have a website naeyc.

org. You can go there to look but what NAEYC accreditation is that it s a voluntary accreditation system for preschools in the United States. If a preschool is interested they apply to the NAEYC. When that accreditation happens, it is a rigorous process for preschools. The accreditors come to the preschool, they listen in all the classrooms to the teacher child interactions, they scour over the records to be sure immunizations are up to date. They look at safety guidelines, they measure safety systems on the playgrounds and be sure that all is well at that preschool. If that school has NAEYC accreditation you can check off that someone has looked at the health and safety that someone has looked at the teacher training, has looked at the language and the discipline style at that preschool. So, there is a lot that you can just check off and be assured that that is going well.
