Originally a full-time preschool teacher, Dr. Rene Hackney now holds a Master?s in school psychology and a PhD. in developmental psychology from George Mason University. She trained at the Developmental Clinic at Children?s National Medical Center and for the public schools, teaching in parenting programs at each. She has also acted as a consultant to several area preschools.

For the last four years, Dr. Hackney has owned and lectured for Parenting Playgroups, Inc, a parenting resource center and preschool classroom in Alexandria Virginia. She has offered workshops to a wide

range of parent, teacher and social work groups during this time.

Workshop topics include eight hours on positive discipline techniques, five hours on early academic issues and common issues such as sibling rivalry and potty training. All workshops provide well researched lecture, in-class practice and open discussion time. Additionally she hosts a monthly parenting focused book club and fun play programs to introduce the preschool setting to young families.

Dr. Hackney is married and has two young children of her own.

Dr. Rene Hackney: Hi, I am Dr. Rene Hackney, I own and teach at Parenting Playgroups which is a Parent Recourse Center in Alexandria, Virginia. We offer a wide range of parenting programs and play programs for children. I do have a Masters in school psychology and a PhD. in developmental psychology along the way I trained at children s hospital and for the public schools.

Host: Why is it important for children to learn to follow directions?

Dr. Rene Hackney: It is important for children to learn to follow directions for many reasons, one, when they get to school age and they are often school system, they are going to be many directions through out the day and keep up with class room and to get their work done there, they are going to need to able to follow those directions and follow them rather independently.

It is also important for safety, if you are giving your child instructions as you get out of the car in a parking lot, it is important for them to follow those directions, so that they can be safe while they are with you. It is also important for children socially, if they learn to follow direction things like turn taking and sharing, it will be that much easier.
