Host: What are the medical consequences of being overweight or obese?
William McCarthy: There are numerous medical consequences of overweight and obesity. Almost all of the chronic diseases that we are seeing anymore somehow are related to obesity either directly or indirectly. For example, type 2 diabetes, 80 to 90% of people with type 2 diabetes are either overweight or obese, other conditions including hypertension, cardiovascular disease such as heart disease and stroke. Diseases such as arthritis, sleep asthenia, acid reflux, liver disease, cirrhosis, galt, hormonal problems.
We also see even problems such as infertility in both males and females. We also see cancers, we are just starting to realize that obesity and overweight is partly responsible for the increase rates of cancer of the breast, cancer of the prostate, even cancer of the liver and now we are starting to see a new syndrome which we are starting to define called metabolic syndrome. These are just some of the diseases and problems caused by obesity and overweight.
