Host: what are the costs of obesity?

Dr. William McCarthy: When we look at cost, we look at:The cost of society both physically and monetarily. First of all two-thirds of the population of the United States right now is overweight. Rates of obesity vary from state to state. But, what we are seeing is it there are about 400 thousand excess deaths a year directly or indirectly caused by the effects of obesity. Secondly, from a monetary point of view, we are spending about at least in the year 2000 about a $117 billion on obesity itself. This is not just a national problem. This is a worldwide problem. Obesity and overweight is actually surpassed infectious disease and malnourishment as the world s number one health problem.
