Today, we are going to be talking about Weight Loss and I am specifically going to be answering questions about obesity and overweight in childhood and teen years. Host: Is childhood obesity a problem?

Dr. William McCarthy: Childhood obesity is becoming a major problem. Overweight and obesity we are just seeing a tremendous increase; as a matter of fact, it has increased three times over the past thirty years. We are starting to see diseases that were really unheard of back in 1970s. We are starting to sees these very commonly in overweight and obese children, problems such as diabetes, problems such as hypertension.

We are even seeing diseases such as sclerosis, liver disease and other problems, we are also seeing a great increase in metabolic syndrome. Right now, about one in six children would be considered obese and about 30% of children are overweight and this is primarily focused on children of African-American, Hispanic and also Native American background. It has become a quite a medical problem and what we are seeing is that the obese child, becomes an obese adult and carries with it all of the medical complications that we have talked about in obesity.
