Well, I am Dr. William McCarthy, Medical Director of the Nova ABC weight loss clinic in Woodbridge, Virginia. Today, we are going to be answering questions about weight loss and more specifically, we are going to be answering your questions about the treatment of obesity. Host: What can be done about this problem?
Dr. William McCarthy: First of all, we need to approach the obesity and overweight problem from a number of factors. Number one is nutrition. We need to make major dietary changes in the way we eat, serving size, fast foods. We need to start looking globally at how we eat.
Second of all, we need to look at exercise. We need to start getting more free time, time that we can get out there, get our heart rates up a little bit and start getting some physical activity.
Third, we need to start breaking bad eating habits. Bad eating habits are learnt from childhood, snack foods, just reaching for food whenever we are happy, whenever we are sad. Around Christmas time, we start to see everybody gives food for presents. We all eat until we are stuffed. Next, there is medication that can be used to treat obesity and finally, there is Bariatric Surgery and we are going to be discussing each one of these over the next several questions.
